We are just about finished scraping and caulking the exterior of our 1st rehab project. The exterior siding is wood. Our intent is to spray primer first, and then the exterior colors. Any tricks of the trade you guys can offer in this area is appreciated.

Yep, don't spray in the wind and don't get over spray on the neighbor's automobiles. :SM034:
When we spray, we spray primer, primary color and then brush paint the trim. Once, the wind kicked up when my painter was spraying and we did get overspray on one of my helper's truck. (very nice black toyota midsize something another). Although it looked bad, the overspray came off pretty easy without damaging the paint.

Is there any particular brand of paint or primer you recommend? Or do you just use what's on sale?

American Tradition from Lowes is a great midgrade paint. Sears has great paint, too. Sherwin Williams is suppose to be a good paint, never used it, though.

nenhum problema (no problem). If it's windy when you paint, use some 10' sticks of 1" pvc with a tarp tied to them to block the wind, or the overspray.
I've been painting a new construction for the past couple of days. I'm very happy with the lowe's paint. One coat coverage in most cases, but that's been all interior. No paint outside (all brick and plastic). I've got some leftover Sears interior paint that I've been using on rentals. I'm also very happy with that. Lowes paint is about $15/gal and sears was $20+/gal.

I've always used Sherwin Williams "(SUPER) Paint" The stuff is simply the best in my book. Remember the cost to paint is in the labor to apply the product, NOT the product itself. Don't scrimp on buying the best paint you can possibly buy!
It actually saves time, money and it lasts for at-least 10 years in every kind of weather!

I've never used the Super Paint but keep hearing about it. Do you use it on the exterior as well? What is the going price for 5 gals? Also, I've never used a sprayer before. How far will 5 gals go? Thanks

Yes they have Super paint, interior and exterior, it goes for about $25 a gallon. The coverage depends on your surfaces, I do more brushing and rolling outdoors to keep the overspray down usually just reserving the final exterior spray for the lower few feet of the exterior walls.
I do shoot the aluminum soffits 1st, with white to bring those back to life when called for.
