Depending on your location? You could multiply the new square footage being added by what your local builders charge.

Say your going to add 250 SQ/FT to the home and your local builders say that the average cost to construct is $85 per Sq/Ft this would be 250 x $85 or $21,500.00 to do the job, now add 10% for cost over-runs and you have something to consider.

Call three builders and get estimates!
