Could anyone tell me approx. cost of vinyl siding for an average single story ranch (1000sq ft living space)?

No, but I can tell you that I consider vinyl siding to be a MISTAKE particularly in parts of the country that are "by the shore". I'd investigate "hardie" planks, or panels, fiber reinforced concrete. Vinyl is often used to "hide" deteriorating wood, termite damage etc, and many savvy buyers know this and will automatically shy away from it.
Cost is heavily determined by prevailing labor rates, and vinyl is often only available through "authorized dealer/installers". Whereas the "hardie" you can purchase and install yourself, or using braceros, as long as complying with local building codes.

Just to put you in the ball park, I vinyl sided a two-story duplex with about 850 S.F. on each floor for about $7K. As above, labor and materials costs vary greatly from one area to another. Your area generally has higher prices than mine, so I'd guess you could do a one-story, 1000 S.F. home for about the same money.

I just got quoted $5500 to side a 1200 sq ft cape, 17 squares. Price includes removal of exisiting aluminum siding and underlying clapboard, new Tyvek, new gutters.
My (local) opinion is that $5500 is a good price. I'd suggest getting at least two more bids and evaluating each bidder.

I am getting another estimate today. That quote was from my roofer, so he could do it all in one shot. The siding really isn't in my budget for this flip, but it would really add to the curb appeal to replace 50 year old chalky aluminum.

That's a pretty good price, the norm is around $350.00 Sq. depending what part of the country you're in. You might want to consider the thickness of the siding that you are getting an estimate on and what kind or R-Value your insulation is going to provide. Check out Alside Siding and Alcoa Siding.

I ended up paying $5000 by reusing the gutters - they were fine, just needed to be cleaned up and repainted.

My great siding deal is turning into a nightmare. My contractor removed the siding while he was finishing my roof - 3 weeks ago, but as of today, my siding is still not complete!!!
1st, the guy that does the siding for my roofer got sick and missed a whole week. apparently my contractor only has 1 guy certified to do siding. Since he didn't know how long his guy would be out, he subbed the job out to a new crew. Wellll, last week was "too hot" for them to work. They worked about 10 hours total out of the last 9 days. Never mind the 3 hour lunch on the 1st day, they didn't even bother to show up early to take advantage of the cooler morning weater, showing up between 9-10 on 2 days and only staying for a couple of hours. Then they took 2 days off for the heat, and worked for 3 hours on Friday afternoon. Did they work yesterday - a beautiful day? uhh, no.
Meanwhile, my floor refinishers have come and gone, I have painted the entire interior of the house, and had the kitchen cabinets assembled. all during the heat wave my poor siders couldn't work in. No my house does not have a/c, we sweated like pigs but got it done. And I can't get the landscaping done until the siding is done.
Lesson learned.
When negotiating a contract, always include a completion date with a $XX penalty for each day beyond the agreed completion date. Since there are sometimes uncontrollable circumstances, such as the recent extreme heat, you can forgive the daily penalty for an appropriate number of days.

FINALLY, finally, my siding is done. Almost 4 weeks after it started!!! The guy I originally hired (who had to sub it out) is giving me $500 off the job, so it is only costing me $4500. almost worth the wait......except that the landscaping isn't done yet - which it would have been if the siders had been done 2 weeks ago like they were supposed to.
That's good to hear after all the horror stories out there.

All in all I think I did a great job picking my contractors. Every one was honest, timely and affordable. I still believe I hired the right guy to do the siding, but he picked the wrong guy when his worker got sick. I was glad to see him step up to the plate and offer compensation for my inconvenience.

It was really just dumb luck. My home inspector gave me the name of my electrician, who gave me my plumber. My real estate agent found the termite repair guy. I found my roofer thru one of his signs in a yard, and I found my floor guy sitting at a stop light leaving Home Depot (he was driving by). I would use them all again.
