That depends on what system is already installed, size, and quality so a very difficult question to answer. 4-6k should be in the ballpark.

How about the current furnace. Are the ducts already in place or is it an old Gravity fed unit? Also, small house or large house? How is the electric service, will it support a new HVAC system? Where is the unit going in the house, meaning is the area easily accessible or will the installer have to re-invent the wheel?

There are a number of variables you need to consider.

Though much of the below applies to a SFH, it is based on the assumption that this property has two or more units. I've italicized the portions which apply to SFH's.

In units which have the necessary ducting and electrical service, I've added central air to several for about $1500. If you need to install ducts, it may be cheaper to buy a property with ducts in place. Upgrading the electric service, if necessary, should cost about $800-$1000 per unit. If you choose to obtain the required permit, you will probably be required to add service and a panel for common areas if that's not already there. Due to the necessary re-wiring for common areas, that extra panel could add $1500 or more to the overall cost which is a good reason to avoid getting a permit if you can get away with it.
