"So You Want to Be A Landlord"
by Nancy Neville

I want to be a landlord
I think I’ll buy a house or two
I’ll fix it up real jazzy and
I’ll rent it out to you

I’ll be a darn good landlord
As my houses are all clean
And I’ll be so understanding
And I know I wont be mean

I know my house will rent real soon
Because it’s nice you see
I’ll use my intuition and
will never charge a fee

And so it was that this came true
a landlord I became
I bought the houses I did see
and registered my name

I fixed them up and beamed with pride
to see the work I done
It cost a lot of money
But it was a lot of fun

I even had my Open House and
applicants came by
I picked the one I thought the best
It was done, I breathed a sigh.

What a life this landlord business
Sitting back, just collect the dough
While others tried to warn me
But heck what do they know

There’s nothing to this business
What could happen that’s so bad
It seems pretty good to me right now
What could ever make me sad

Oh, the telephone is ringing
You say your not going to pay your rent
Your car broke down and you had it fixed
and so your rent has all been spent.

And the kids broke all the windows
playing hide and seek indoors.
The tub overflowed all over and
has warped the hardwood floors.

You have no heat or water
because you turned the knobs too tight.
You didn’t know they turned to the left
and you turned them to the right.

And you say if I dont fix it
you will go to court and sue.
What did I get myself into
Whatever shall I do.

They seemed so nice what happened
It’s all happening so fast.
These damages will break me
I don’t know how long I’ll last.

Oh no another phone call
You say an Inspector told you what
That the house will need repainting
Due to Lead Paint and
“Lots of Luck

But I don’t have any money.
I spent every penny, every dime.
It went into these rentals
and the damages aren’t mine

How can I make a profit if this is how it is.
If only I had listened
regarding this landlord biz.

So if you are a newbie,
listen carefully to what is said.
Everything will work out fine
Don’t use your heart but use your head.
