Is there a correct/polite way to ask to buy someones house...

who is not actually selling it at the current time. There is a house in my area which has been vacant for about 10yrs now. The owner must have started to rehab it about 3-4 yrs ago and suddenly stopped. I am thinking about sending a letter to his current address? Anyone have a sample letter? Or would I be better off dropping my business card and a note at the property? What if nobody stops by?

If you know where the current owner lives it might be a good idea to either go doorknock him and just ask if he might be interested in selling or trying to get his phone number and giving him a call. My guess is if it has been vacant that long he is probably getting more than just your letter...what reason will yours give him to bother to open it? If he isn['t home when you doorknock, it is ok to leave something behind asking him to contact you if he is interested in selling...that's different than a letter, it says you were standing on his doorstep.
Face to face is so much better...maybe he will see something in you personally that might make him want to sell to you rather than the handfuls of other investors that have probably already tried to conact him.

I rarely answer my door when people knock on it. They are usually either trying to get elected or selling something I would never be interested in buying.

www.Zabasearch.com (http://www.Zabasearch.com) using owners name to find phone number and then call with Air's comments. They'll answer the phone!
