I just read this article on filling in wood paneling, has anyone done this before? This method sounds pretty good but I would think the tape over the empty strips would crack if you nailed into it.
Ooopssss almost forgot the link

I've done it but it's been many years ago. The tape is no more likely to crack than if it were on sheetrock. I never much cared for the paneling but my current residence has a LOT of wood, real wood, not paneling. Not sure what we'll do when we decide to sell!

yeah but the tape is covering an open space ( the slits in between the wood paneling) I am thinking about just priming the wood and painting-not worrying about filing in. When I sell I will think about doing that

I saw a product for sale at Lowe's that is made for resurfacing of paneling. Check it out.

I would fill the space with joint compound before you apply the tape and "float" it.

So you recommend just painting over it, or you think I should fill it in?

I usually just paint it white to lighten up room.
Often I use gloss enamel for easy cleaning

Eric and I do faux finishing for a living, so I know a little about this. I'd paint the paneling, it will give the walls some character. FIRST, prime with BIN made by Zinsser. Depending on the paneling, if you don't use the BIN first the latex primer/paint will draw the tanins from the paneling, causing the walls to be stained and blotchy.
