It also depends on what rate your paying now, and what rate are these companies offering on a new card?
Blittles, I've been in your situation. In the past, cards sometimes waived that fee (I've usually seen about 3%, which can be worth it depending on your situation). You might be able to talk to a rep at the card and ask them to waive it or cap--I have done that before. Believe it or not, you can negotiate with these card companies, especially if you are going to be a new client and they want your business.
Listen, before everyone jumps on me that credit card debt is bad, let me tell you that I generally agree. I do not actually carry a credit card for anything at all. However, several years ago, I had an opportunity purchase a piece of waterfront land for a steal, but I had no cash. What I did have was a 0% balance transfer offer from a credit card sitting on my desk. I called, and they said if I use one of the checks they provide me, it would be considered a balance transfer. For a very small fee to the CC company, I bought my little piece of waterfront heaven and have never paid a dime more for it (except taxes). I rolled that balance over twice (never paid the fee--always sweet-talked the new CC company), and finally paid it off when I flipped another property. So, sometimes there's a good reason to have a credit card balance.
Hope this helps, B.
PS: By the way, I always found MBNA had great balance transfer deals. You might want to call them.

See, I always paid in cash for everything as well…after I finished paying all of my credit cards, I decided that I didn’t want anymore cc, but got one for emergency issues. It is the only one that I have, and want to pay off asap.
BSH - thanks, I will look into MBNA. I actually called my current card company that I am with and spoke to a rep last week and he told me that I didn't qualify to get my rate lowered, but then another rep told me I was ...so everyone at the company is telling me something different. I'm going to call them again.
Thanks for your help!
