I was just reading Tim's article called "Security Of Your Social Security".

I agree wholeheartedly with his article. I have fought against providing my social security, especially to our health insurance and doctor's offices. I was very surprised to see that I'm not alone. The difference is, Tim found a way to fight it better than I ever could. I will definitely try his honest tactics.

I have Tim's blessing to provide you the link of his article written for the Field Guide: http://fieldguideforinvestors.com/articles/security-your-social-security-number

I'd like to take the opportunity to tell you that if you're every "thinking" of joining the Field Guide---please do! I can not emphasize how pleased I've been with Tim's Field Guide. Warning: Field Guide is not for tire kickers or wanting to stay small within RE field.

Great job, Tim! :praise:

Amen to that! I used to work at a dental office, and I know that the SS# is always requested. It is usually used to track insurance claims and identify the patient; at least, that's what the front desk staff or office managers will tell you. However, it is absolutely true that there is no reason why the office cannot manage without your SS#. Insurance companies these days have all but eliminated using the patient's SS# as an indentifier. Check your insurance card--it should have some other number on it. If the office's computer system absolutely must assign some number to you, they can darn well make up a number. I used to do that. I'd begin the number with a zero so it was obvious it was not the person's SS#. There was never any problem, so stand up for your right.

It is my understanding that in some states it is actually illegal to photocopy a driver's license. If that's the case for your state, you have even stronger legal reasons to stand your ground.

It's a Social Security card--the purpose is to identify you with Social Security. So your employer will need the number and so with Social Security. That's it.

Thanks for the link--I agree 100%. And that's my 2 cents. :-)

for you old timers out "62ish" if you have your original SS card you may even see on the front at the botton where is printed " NOT TO BE USED FOR IDENTIFICATION"
